Meet & Greet the GBS Finalist Principal Conductor Series

In this special year for the GBS, 5 Finalist Conductors vy for the position as Principal Conductor replacing retired Maestro Gustav Meier. The 5 were chosen from over 150 applicants interested in following the steps of the legendary Meier, each with wonderful credentials.

Join GBS board members, subscribers and friends in one, two, or all five of the Tuesday evenings Meet & Greet events that will be held in the same week as the Saturday evening concert at area establishments. Each event will run between 6:30 PM and 8:30 PM and provides the opportunity to speak one-on-one with the conductor candidate in an informal setting. Wine, soft drinks and light snacks will be provided. Background music will be provided by pianists David Harris, Dr. Joe Utterback, or Orin Grossman depending on evening. October 22, 2013 - Jonathan Andrew Govias - Southport, Pequot Library

Jonathan Andrew Govias, now  a resident of Charlotte, North Carolina, is a conductor, author and public speaker who focuses on social music theory and practice. He recently concluded his engagement as resident conductor of the Symphony Nova Scotia to accept his current position as Director of Orchestras at the University of North Carolina Charlotte.

Music by society pianist David Harris. David is a noted piano recording artist, entertainer, vocalist, and church musician. He is Director of Music at St. Thomas Acquinas RC Church, Fairfield, and a favorite entertainer for GBS events.

This event will be held at the historic Pequot Library, 720 Pequot Avenue, Southport, Concert Hall.




December 10, 2013 - Eric Jacobsen - location TBA


Eric Jacobsen,  a resident of New York, was identified by the Los Angeles Times as helping to ensure "the future of classical music in America." A cellist of renown, Jacobsen is a member of Yo-Yo Ma's Silk Road Project and a member of the faculty at New York University, where he conducts orchestras and teaches cello and chamber music.


March 11, 2014 - Lawrence Loh - location TBA


Lawrence Loh,  of Pittsburgh,  is resident conductor of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, music director of the Northeastern Pennsylvania Philharmonic and music director/conductor of the Pittsburgh Youth Symphony Orchestra.


April 8, 2014 - Jacomo Bairos - location TBA

Jacomo Rafael Bairos,  a resident of Charlotte, N.C., is guest conductor of the Charlotte Symphony Orchestra, where he has conducted subscription concerts  throughout the season; also an orchestral tubist.
