First Church Fairfield Concert Series - Celestial Sounds
Celestial sounds will fill the sanctuary on Sunday afternoon, March 10th at 4 pm when Etherea, a group of nine treble voices, sings at First Church. Led by countertenor and director Derek Greten-Harrison, Etherea will be accompanied by Alan Murchie, piano and organ, and Grace Cloutier, harp, performing works by Holst, Mendelssohn, Rheinberger, and Rossini. Choral Journal calls their work “unique
and exciting . . .wonderful singing . . . shimmering.”
Founded at Yale in December 2009, Etherea made its debut with Ceremony of Carols which they then recorded; this recording was released November 2011 to critical acclaim, when Opera News reported that the chamber group gave an elegant and nuanced performance. Hymn to the Dawn, a second album, was just released this January also with accompaniment by Cloutier and Murchie. You may access some sound clips from Hymn to the Dawn by visiting the Etherea Vocal Ensemble web site.
Alan Murchie is well known in this area having served as Organist and Choir Master at Trinity Episcopal Church, Southport from 2007--2011; he is currently serving St. Johnʼs Episcopal Church, Washington, CT, and is Adjunct Professor of Music History at Fairfield University where he also conducts the university orchestra.
Please join us for this “ethereal” vocal ensembleʼs presentation followed by a wine and cheese reception. First Church Congregational, 148 Beach Road, Fairfield, CT 06824, 4:00 pm, March 20th.
Suggested donation $30. Information about this concert is also on our website at www.firstchurchfairfield.org.
